About 55 people gathered around tractors and large farm equipment parked along Route 890 in Cornhill Wednesday morning to protest seismic exploration in the area.

They are worried about the effects of natural gas exploration and development on agricultural land between Grand Lake and Moncton, said protester Jane Bradbrook.

Residents feel they've done all they can to let the provincial government know they don't want the industry, she said.

"We've been protesting in all the most peaceful ways we can for the past year ever since we first got notice this valley was slated for exploration and development," said Bradbrook.

"We've sent petitions to our government, we have talked to all our government officials, we have marched in every city."

The protesters blocked one lane of traffic for about three hours, starting about 7 a.m.

Meanwhile a spokesperson for Corridor Resources said the company has the necessary approval to work in the area.

Crews are expected to remain in the area for the next few days. The Cornhill protest is the latest in a series of anti-shale gas protests across the province.

A Fracking Protest

More people need to realize the negative impact to one's health and the environment that can result from hydraulic fracturing, especially those who live beyond the Marcellus Shale region (the area of the Northeastern U.S. that contains perhaps the richest natural gas deposit and is currently being heavily developed).
